Ghorapukurdhar

Puja at Ghorapukurdhar is one of the most widely celebrated and spiritually significant festivals in eastern India, particularly in West Bengal, where it honors Maa Jagadhatri, a powerful form of Goddess Durga symbolizing the universal force that sustains and protects the cosmos. Rooted in centuries-old Bengali tradition and mythology, this vibrant festival is believed to have gained special prominence during the 18th and 19th centuries, especially in regions like Chandannagar, when aristocrats and local communities began organizing grand-scale celebrations. Unlike Durga Puja, Jagadhatri Puja is celebrated in the month of Kartik (October–November), typically four days after Diwali, adding spiritual light and devotion to the post-Diwali period. The festival is marked by traditional rituals such as the Chokkhudaan (eye-painting of the idol), Pushpanjali (flower offerings), Anjali (prayer offerings), and Sindoor Khela (vermilion play), bringing together devotees in a display of collective faith and culture. The idol of Maa Jagadhatri is crafted with exquisite care by skilled artisans, adorned in vibrant attire and ornate ornaments, and placed inside creatively designed pandals that reflect both traditional motifs and innovative themes.
